U.S. Monitoring Situation in Cuba

Aug. 8, 1962 - United States officials said today that they had no information that Soviet soldiers had been landing in Cuba. Experts in Washington appeared to doubt the stories that have been circulating. Dr. Salvador Leu, a Cuban news specialist, said in a Spanish-language broadcast over a Miami radio station yesterday that more than 4,000 Russian soldiers had landed in Cuba recently. He said his information came from travelers from Cuba. A check in Havana brought no confirmation of the report. Rumors of such landings have circulated in the U.S. and in Cuba from time to time, but have never been confirmed.
