Oct. 27, 1962 - A U-2 reconnaissance plane is missing and presumed lost over Cuba. Other unarmed planes on surveillance missions over Cuba have been fired upon, apparently by Cubans and not Russians. Measures will be taken to “insure that such missions are effective and protected,” the Defense Department warned. This indicated that armed escorts would be supplied for photo reconnaissance aircraft. The Pentagon identified the pilot of the missing plane as Major Rudolf Anderson Jr. (pictured), 35 years old, of Greenville, S.C.
