U-2 Reconnaissance Plane Down in Cuba

Oct. 27, 1962 - A U-2 reconnaissance plane is missing and presumed lost over Cuba. Other unarmed planes on surveillance missions over Cuba have been fired upon, apparently by Cubans and not Russians. Measures will be taken to “insure that such missions are effective and protected,” the Defense Department warned. This indicated that armed escorts would be supplied for photo reconnaissance aircraft. The Pentagon identified the pilot of the missing plane as Major Rudolf Anderson Jr. (pictured), 35 years old, of Greenville, S.C. It said the pilot’s next of kin were his wife, Frances Jane, and his sons, Rudolf 3rd, 5 years old, and James, 3.
