Aug. 28, 1962 - The House Rules Committee formally recommended today that the House Committee on Un-American Activities investigate the Black Muslims. There were indications that the committee would take the advice and open an investigation of the Negro sect. The resolution was approved after its author, Representative L. Mendel Rivers, Democrat of South Carolina, stated that the segregationist group, also known as the Nation of Islam, teaches members how to use judo, knives, and blackjacks and preaches hatred of whites.
