Gillespie Performance in New Orleans Canceled Over Racial Prohibition

Oct. 7, 1961 - A concert by Dizzy Gillespie (left) and his band at Tulane University in New Orleans on Tuesday has been canceled because he has a white piano player among the five Negro musicians. The player is Lalo Schifrin (right), a native of Argentina who has been with Mr. Gillespie for a year. A spokesman for the university said Mr. Gillespie's appearance was called off because of a state law prohibiting integrated performances. Mr. Gillespie said in Kansas City, where he is playing at a nightclub, "My New York agent called me Friday and asked if I could get a colored piano player for the Tulane concert. I told them 'No,' very emphatically.”
