July 30, 1961 - Many East Germans took refuge in West Berlin over the weekend. Refugee officials said more than 1,900 had registered at the Marienfelde reception center in the 17-hour period that ended at 3 p.m. today. This was said to be the highest weekend total of refugees since the 1953 anti-Communist uprising in East Germany shortly after the death of Joseph Stalin. The East Berlin press hinted today of new measures against "border jumpers." A similar threat was issued by the East Germany regime yesterday.
