A Minor Victory for South Vietnamese Troops and Their U.S. Advisors

Mar. 2, 1962 - United States Army helicopters, grounded since Tuesday’s attempt by two Vietnamese Air Force pilot to assassinate President Diem, carried Vietnamese troops to a minor victory today against Viet Cong Communist forces. The American helicopters carried Vietnamese troops to An Xuyen Province at the extreme southern tip of Vietnam. There the troops killed one guerrilla and captured three Viet Cong troopers in what the American pilots called “a very smooth operation.” Admiral Harry D. Felt (pictured), commander in chief for the Pacific, has blocked press coverage of the helicopter operations. He is said to believe that the American public might be getting too vivid an impression of U.S. participation in the Vietnamese “struggle.”
