June 20, 1962 - Martin Gabel and his wife Arlene Francis (pictured with their son Peter in 1953) have agreed to pay $185,000 to the widow of a Detroit man who was killed two years ago when a dumbbell fell from the Gabels’ eighth-floor window on Park Avenue. The dumbbell, used as a window prop, was accidentally dislodged by a maid. It landed on Mr. Alvin Rodecker’s head, killing him instantly. The Gabels were away at the time. Mr. Rodecker’s widow had filed suit for $500,000.

Mickey Rooney Files for Bankruptcy
June 12, 1962 - Mickey Rooney filed petitions of voluntary bankruptcy in Federal court today. The actor listed debts of $484,914 and assets of $500 worth of household goods and clothes. His biggest debt, he said, is $168,000 due on a personal loan from Fryman Enterprises of Beverly Hills. May 28, 1962 - Hugh Griffith, the Academy-Award-winning actor playing the part of a judge in the play “The Caucasian Chalk Circle,” nearly strangled himself last night when he slipped during a mock hanging scene and the noose around his neck tightened. He lost consciousness, and the curtain at London’s Aldwych Theatre was lowered while he was carried to his dressing room to recover.
