Stanley Kubrick's "Lolita" Set to Open this Spring

Feb. 13, 1962 - Stanley Kubrick’s film version of “Lolita,” which has been described as a “faithful adaptation” of the controversial novel by Vladimir Nabokov, will be released this spring by MGM. The world distribution arrangement was made after the company had received assurance that the film would not be condemned by the National Legion of Decency. According to a source close to the production, the Roman Catholic reviewing organization has agreed to place the film in a “separate classification,” provided the advertising specifies that “no one under 18 will be admitted.” The novel deals with a love affair between a middle-aged European intellectual and a 12-year-old American girl. Although the lovers’ ages are not mentioned in the film, the roles are played by James Mason, 52, and Sue Lyon, who was 14 when the film was made. The British comedian, Peter Sellers, is cast as the playwright who finally abducts the girl, with Shelly Winters playing Lolita’s mother.
