President Welcomes Wife and Daughter Home

Aug. 31, 1962 - President Kennedy welcomed his wife Jacqueline and his daughter Caroline home tonight from their trip to Italy. Dusk was falling at the Quonset Naval Air Station, 10 miles from Newport, R.I., as the Kennedy family plane set down at 7:20 p.m. The President went on board to greet his wife and daughter. About two minutes later, the family descended from the plane and were greeted by Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy and his wife Ethel. The President and Mrs. Kennedy were smiling broadly as they came down the ramp from the plane. Caroline seemed somewhat overwhelmed by the immensity of the reception and by all the sailors and marines drawn up in ranks. When Mrs. Kennedy descended from the plane, she was presented with flowers by a Rhode Island state trooper.
