President Kennedy Attends Mass in Washington

Nov. 1, 1963 - President Kennedy attended an 11 a.m. mass today at Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Washington, D.C. On the church calendar, this was All Saint’s Day, a feast day on which all Catholics are required to attend services. The Chief Executive has cancelled plans to attend the Army-Air Force football game tomorrow in Chicago and will remain in Washington because of the military coup in South Vietnam. Virtually the only official statement by the Kennedy Administration concerning the revolt was an emphatic denial that the U.S. had anything to do with the overthrow of the Government of President Ngo Dinh Diem. “I can categorically state that the United States Government was not in any way involved in this coup,” Richard I. Phillips of the State Department said.
