Number of Executions in U.S. Continues Steady Decline

Apr. 25, 1962 - The number of executions for criminal offenses fell to a record low of 42 last year, the Federal Bureau of Prisons reported today. This was a decline of 15 from 1960, and was the lowest total for any 12-month period since the Government began keeping records in 1930. The annual total of executions ranged from 140 to 199 in the 1930s, never climbed above 153 in the 1940s, and has been well below 100 in every year except one since 1950.
