New York Better Business Bureau Puts Kibosh on "Jackie Sunglasses"

June 14, 1962 - The Better Business Bureau of New York City warned stores today against the labeling of curved sunglasses as “Jackie Sunglasses.” The labeling had followed the purchase and use by Mrs. Jacqueline Kennedy of two pairs of the glasses. Lee C. White, Assistant Special Counsel to the President, had indicated to the Better Business Bureau that the use of the names and photographs of the President and First Lady was a violation of the historical policy that bars the use of the name or likeness of the President and his family for commercial purposes. Hugh R. Jackson, president of the Better Business Bureau of New York, called the violation to the attention of the stores, and they immediately withdrew all material making the association.
