Mrs. Kennedy Replaces Prayer Card Photograph

Dec. 21, 1963 - Mrs. Jacqueline Kennedy has replaced the serious photograph of the late President on his prayer card with a more characteristic smiling profile (pictured). A new printing of the cards was ordered because of the tremendous demand. The first printing of 10,000 was distributed during and shortly after Mr. Kennedy’s funeral. The prayer cards are used by Roman Catholics as reminders to pray for the deceased. By custom, they are inserted in the holder’s prayer books. White House aides made the original photograph selection. Mrs. Kennedy replaced it with a photograph that was used on campaign buttons. She made the original selections from her husband’s Inaugural Address for the back of the card and also selected the prayer: “Dear God, please take care of your servant, John Fitzgerald Kennedy.”
