Mar. 31, 1962 - Salem Productions, the independent film company headed by director Martin Ritt and Paul Newman, has settled on the first property it will film for Paramount release. The drama is based on a novel by Larry McMurtry called “Horsemen Pass By.” Paramount last week announced the film’s title as “Wildest of the Thousand,” but Mr. Ritt and Mr. Newman have temporarily titled it “Hud.” The script is set in the contemporary West and is an adventure and character study dealing with a heroic type who turns out to be a fraud, played by Paul Newman.
