Main Points of President Kennedy’s Press Conference

July 5, 1962 - President Kennedy made the following points at his news conference today:

Taxes — He prefers to wait until 1963 for an income tax cut and tax reform but he is watching the economy closely to determine whether the cut should come sooner.

Shelters — He believes this is the time for Congress to approve his request for a $700 million fallout shelter construction program, not when another crisis arises.

Medicare — He urged approval of the medical aid bill in the Senate and said he could not understand the American Medical Association’s opposition to a bill that does not include physicians’ fees.

GOP — He said he would not disagree with former President Eisenhower’s statement that the Republican party was the party of business.
