Kennedy Designates Wirtz Secretary of Labor

Aug. 30, 1962 - President Kennedy designated W. Willard Wirtz as Secretary of Labor today. Mr. Wirtz, the Labor Department’s Under Secretary, will succeed Arthur J. Goldberg. Mr. Goldberg was named to the Supreme Court yesterday by the President to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Associate Justice Felix Frankfurter. The President said that he knew Mr. Wirtz would “carry on in the fine tradition set by Arthur Goldberg toward effective leadership in the field of labor and labor-management and in the public interest.” Mr. Wirtz, a 50-year-old former Chicago law partner and campaign adviser of Adlai E. Stevenson, has provided strong support to Mr. Goldberg in operating the department and in trying to resolve key labor-management disputes.
