May 6, 1963 - A former serviceman who pleaded guilty to a charge that he threatened to murder President Kennedy was sentenced to a year in prison in Spartanburg, South Carolina today. The government charged that Virdell Willingham, alias John H. Willingham, 33, mailed a letter to the President of the United States. The letter, addressed to President Kennedy, said in part: “I have been kicked out of all the military services. I would like for you to get me back in. If I don’t get an answer in the next few days, I am going to see you in Washington through the scope of a high-powered rifle.”
