Sept. 19, 1964 - Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris each clouted two-run homers as the Yankees walloped Kansas City, 8-3, today at Yankee Stadium and strengthened their hold on first place in the American League.
The victory moved the Yanks one-half game ahead of the Baltimore Orioles, who were rained out tonight. The Chicago White Sox dropped two games off the pace, losing, 1-0, to Washington in 10 innings.
John Wyatt, the fourth Kansas City pitcher, tied the major league record for appearances by a pitcher, coming on in the sixth for the 74th time this season.
Dick Radatz of Boston had equaled the record only the night before. Jim Konstanty set the mark in 1950 with the Phillies.
Mantle got the Yankees off to a 2-0 lead with his 32nd homer in the first inning. The shot, off Diego Segui, the starter, came after Bobby Richardson collected the first of his four singles.
Maris capped the Yankee scoring with his 23rd homer in a three-run eighth inning. Richardson, who had singled across Ralph Terry, was aboard at the time.
New York scored its other three runs in the third, the first two on Elston Howard’s bases-loaded single.
Al Downing pitched the first five innings for the Yanks, just enough to receive credit for his 13th victory against eight defeats. He became the first A.L. hurler to pass the 200-strikeout mark this season, reaching 201 by fanning five Athletics. Al is the first Yankee pitcher to pass 200 since Whitey Ford posted 209 in 1961.
