July 26, 1961 - Today's job for the Yankees at the Stadium was to dig in and consolidate their position atop the American League standings. This they accomplished by slugging four home runs, which felled the White Sox, 5-2. In his first two at-bats, Johnny Blanchard homered, thus extending his home run streak to four in as many at-bats, tying a major league record. The New York catcher had started the streak in Boston last weekend, when he connected twice in successive pinch-hitting roles. Mickey Mantle and Cletis Boyer belted the other homers today. Mantle's clout was his 39th of the season. It put him one behind is equally destructive teammate, Roger Maris, the major league leader in home runs.
