Sept. 9, 1964 - The New York World’s Fair clearly is not going to be able to keep free of politics, like it or not.
Today was the third incursion into the fairgrounds by politicians since the election campaign opened. Rhode Island Senator John Pastore, keynote speaker at the Democratic National Convention, and William F. Buckley Jr. (pictured), a Goldwater supporter and editor of the conservative National Review magazine, met head-on on a new program televised at the RCA Pavilion called “Firing Line.”
The program, which will be shown eventually on a national network, took up the question of extremism and the coming election. Buckley will be host on the series to be taped weekly at the fair for future showing. Pastore was his first guest.
As a confrontation of two men with opposite views, it was at times a fiery exchange, with neither of the speakers able to conclude a sentence. Shouting and waving a finger, each charged the other and the other’s party with irresponsibility and with holding extreme views.
