White Sox Top Twins, Who Commit 7 Errors

May 7, 1965 - The Chicago White Sox and Minnesota Twins fled Metropolitan Stadium in a fog tonight. Well, it was more of a daze as far as the Twins were concerned.

The White Sox, reveling in their American League leadership, hit four home runs. They came from behind twice and battered five Minnesota pitchers for 13 hits and 28 total bases.

But none of this punishment was as painful to 8,619 customers as was the record total of seven errors which the Twins contributed to a 13-5 White Sox frolic.

Pete Ward (pictured), blanked in the home run derby until tonight, finally got his first one, a 434-foot two-run blast.

Ron Hansen and Danny Cater each hit his third homer of the season, Cater’s delivering three runs in the seventh to hang the defeat on rookie Dave Boswell, the second Minnesota pitcher. Al Weis, demonstrating a flair for power, his first homer and first double of the year.

Cater, pleased with his power hitting, admitted he collected only one homer last season with Philadelphia.“I hit a nice, slow curve for the homer,” Danny said. “It was the same pitch that Dave Boswell had struck me out on two innings earlier.”

Eddy Fisher was the deserving winner, although one of his two predecessors, starter Tommy John, pitched very well after surrendering Minnesota’s only homer — a three-run smash in the first inning by Harmon Killebrew.

Bob Locker, brought on in an attempt to safeguard a 4-3 Sox lead in the sixth, was not equal to the task. But Chicago bats got things in motion again, and Fisher pitched three perfect innings for his second relief triumph.

“Tommy was getting a little tired,” said Chicago manager Al Lopez. “I didn’t want to wait until he was in trouble before getting him out. I had hoped Locker could come in, get the side out, and save the game for John. It didn’t quite work out that way, but I just felt John needed some help.”
