West Destroys East in AFL All-Star Game

Jan. 16, 1965 - John Hadl threw three touchdown passes today in a 38-14 West rout of the East in the AFL All-Star game.

A crowd of 15,446 also watched Keith Lincoln (pictured) catch a 73-yard touchdown pass and score on an 80-yard run at Houston’s Jeppesen Stadium.

The game was moved from New Orleans last Monday after 21 Negro players had charged racial discrimination.

Hadl, a San Diego quarterback, played most of the game after Len Dawson of Kansas City suffered a nose injury in the first period.

Dawson scored the long scoring pass to Lincoln, the fleet San Diego back, on the first scrimmage play of the game.

The game, marred by frequent fumbles, was played in bright sunshine in 43-degree temperature.

Lincoln’s scoring sprint came in the third period after he had taken a pitchout from Hadl.

The former Washington State star broke around his right end and ran away from the East. Lincoln had been knocked out of San Diego’s losing championship game with Buffalo on Dec. 26 with a broken rib.

Hadl hit Clem Daniels of Oakland with a 5-yard touchdown pass in the second period. He tossed a 7-yarder for a score to Lance Alworth of San Diego and a 17-yarder to Art Powell of Oakland in the second half.

Tom Brooker of Kansas City, star of the overtime victory by Dallas in the 1962 AFL title game at Jeppesen Stadium, kicked a 46-yard field goal for the West. He also added the five conversions.

The West line, led by big Earl Faison of San Diego, climbed over the East’s passers and threw them six times for losses of 63 yards. The overmatched East made only a net of 7 yards rushing.

Lincoln was voted the outstanding offensive player in the game and Willie Brown of Denver, who intercepted a pass and did a fine job at cornerback, was voted the top defensive player in a press box poll.

The West players received $700 each and the East $500 each. A share of the receipts and the $75,000 television money went into the pension fund.
