Warriors Destroy Knicks at the Garden

Feb. 29, 1964 - Two top-liners were missing from the San Francisco lineup tonight, but that did not prevent the Warriors from protecting their Western division lead with a decisive 136-110 victory over the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden. With Wilt Chamberlain notching 37 points, the San Franciscans held their 2½-game margin over the St. Louis Hawks, who captured a 115-114 overtime decision over the third-place Los Angeles Lakers.

The Knicks were guilty of sloppy ball-handling, errant passes, and horrible shooting, turning in yet another lackluster performance in a season marked by numerous failures. They have failed especially against the Warriors, who gained their eighth victory in nine games against New York.

No doubt the loss of Gary Phillips and Nate Thurmond hindered the San Franciscans’ play tonight. But Alex Hannum’s troops were capable of running the Knicks ragged in a game the Warriors needed badly. Al Attles, starting in Phillips’ place, hit a career high of 33 points in a clutch performance that was typical of his effort all season.

The Knicks gained an early edge at 12-4, but Chamberlain and Attles drove the Warriors into a 33-28 first-quarter lead, and it was 65-47 for San Francisco at the intermission as New York went five minutes into the second quarter without a field goal. When the margin reached 85-55 with six minutes left, Hannum began substituting freely — as well as a coach can do when he has only eight able-bodied players.

The Warriors, who got double-figure efforts from seven of their eight performers, still are not out of trouble, considering their injuries. They not only play Detroit tomorrow on the Pistons’ home court but must meet second-place St. Louis at San Francisco’s Cow Palace Monday and Thursday in a pair of head-to-heads that may well determine the Western division title.

In the first game of the Garden doubleheader tonight, the Boston Celtics broke away in the last six minutes to defeat the Detroit Pistons, 115-108, and maintain their 2½-game lead over Cincinnati in the Eastern division.
