Nov. 3, 1964 | Republican Senator Kenneth Keating (GOP-N.Y.), a 1958 upset victor over Frank Hogan by 132,992 votes, was defeated in this year’s election by Robert F. Kennedy, who rolled up a near 2-1 margin in Democratic New York City and ran about 3-2 in usually Republican upstate sections of the state. Keating, 64 years old, conceded the election by sending this telegram to Kennedy: “Congratulations on your victory. The people of New York have expressed their judgment, and I stand ready to assist you. I wish you every success in carrying out your senatorial duties.
