[VIDEO] May 5, 1965 | Adlai Stevenson Speaks on Dominican Crisis

May 5, 1965 - Adlai Stevenson said today at the U.N. that the U.S. “emergency action” in the Dominican Republic had two aims: “to protect lives and to give the inter-American system a chance to deal with a situation within its competence.”

The U.S. representative gave the Security Council a list of three Communist parties and nine Communist leaders who, he said, were trying to win control in the Dominican Republic.

However, Stevenson did not say, as President Johnson had previously, that another purpose of the U.S. troop landings was to prevent a Communist take-over there.
