[VIDEO] May 1964 | LBJ’s Poverty Tour

May 1964 - President and Mrs. Johnson toured economically depressed areas of the United States this month to highlight the problem of poverty. President Johnson, who declared “war on poverty” in his State of the Union address on January 8, seeks to expand the Federal government’s roles in education and health care as poverty reduction strategies. These policies can be seen as a continuation of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal policies.
