[VIDEO] May 14, 1965 | Queen Elizabeth Honors JFK

May 14, 1965 - Queen Elizabeth gave an acre of hallowed English meadowland to the U.S. today in memory of President Kennedy.

Mrs. Jacqueline Kennedy sat holding back her tears as the queen, in a simple, moving ceremony, dedicated a white stone memorial in Runnymede to the President “who in death my people still mourn.”

Brilliant sunshine bathed the historic site as the queen said of Kennedy: “With all their hearts, my people shared his triumphs, grieved at his reverses, and wept at his death.”

Mrs. Kennedy, who attended the ceremony with her two children, John and Caroline, did not speak during the dedication. But later she issued a statement of gratitude to the British peoplein which she recalled that British literature and leadership had shaped Kennedy’s life as had no other part of his education.

In a reference to her children, she said, “One day, they will realize what it means to have their father honored at Runnymede.”

After the ceremony, the Kennedys visited Windsor Castle for tea with the queen and Prince Philip.
