Mar. 7, 1965 - On the CBS-TV program “Face the Nation” today, Sectetary of State Dean Rusk said that two new battalions of U.S. Marines going to South Vietnam will shoot back if they are shot at. But he asserted that their mission is the clamping of a tight protective security ring around the strategic Da Nang Air Base, thus relieving South Vietnamese ground forces for combat against the Communists.
Rusk restated the American position that any meaningful negotiated settlement in Vietnam must be preceded by evidence that Hanoi — and its principal backer, Peking — will leave South Vietnam alone.
