[VIDEO] June 25, 1965 | LBJ Speech at San Francisco Opera House

June 25, 1965 - President Johnson appealed to the United Nations today to mobilize its influence and lead North Vietnam to the conference table and a negotiated peace.

The appeal was launched at the opening of ceremonies in the San Francisco Opera House commemorating the 20th anniversary of the signing of the Charter of the United Nations on June 26, 1945.

The hushed seriousness of the occasion within the opera house contrasted sharply with the chanting of hundreds of pickets outside. There, in the sunshine, they waved their banners and shouted slogans attacking U.S. intervention in Southeast Asia and calling on Johnson to remove American forces from Vietnam. Some demonstrators called for Johnson’s impeachment.
