[VIDEO] Feb. 11, 1964 | The Beatles’ Washington Coliseum Performance

Feb. 12, 1964 - They screamed, they shrieked, they clapped, they stomped, they howled, they ooh-ed and ah-ed, but especially they squealed tonight for England’s latest cultural exchange offering — the Beatles. More than 8,000 teenagers, most of them girls, packed the Washington Coliseum for the first live U.S. performance by the mop-topped singers from Liverpool. In keeping with tradition, the audience hurled jelly beans to the quartet while the music played. “Ringo! Ringo!” one girl sobbed. But drummer Ringo Starr had troubles of his own. The revolving platform which was supposed to turn him around and around while the music played refused to work. But the Beatles spun it by hand and went on with the show.
