Aug. 27, 1964 - A massive spontaneous demonstration, sparked by a memorial program in honor of the late John F. Kennedy, brought the Democratic national convention to a complete standstill tonight while President Johnson waited backstage to accept his nomination for election.
For a full 14 minutes, the packed convention hall cheered and cheered while the late President’s younger brother Robert stood, silent and sober, at the rostrum.
Nothing at the convention — not the reception given President Johnson himself a night earlier, and not the outburst for Vice-Presidential nominee Hubert Humphrey — had come close to matching it for sound or duration or emotion.
