[VIDEO] Apr. 13, 1964 | Sidney Poitier Wins Best Actor Oscar

Apr. 13, 1964 - Sidney Poitier became the first Negro ever to win the Academy Award as best actor, presented to him tonight at the 36th annual Oscar presentations in Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. Although the modest “Lilies of the Field” won only one Oscar, that was the one that went to Poitier, and it was greeted with a roar from the crowd. In the picture, Poitier played an itinerant handyman who helps a group of German nuns build a church in the desolate Arizona desert.
