V.P. Johnson Urges Texas to Elect Gonzalez to Congress

Nov. 3, 1961 - Vice President Johnson urged voters in San Antonio to vote for State Senator Henry Gonzalez (center) tomorrow to “show we can elect a man to the U.S. Congress regardless of his race.” “The eyes of the whole world are on us,” Mr. Johnson said. “They want to see whether we’re bigots, whether we’re going to be prejudiced or whether we’ll all go out and vote for a good American.” The Vice President said President Kennedy would use Mr. Gonzalez “to work on racial and other problems” if Mr. Gonzalez is elected.
