Uncle Sam Poster Makes Another Comeback

Dec. 3, 1961 - The Army is reviving the famous World War I poster of Uncle Sam pointing sternly at the viewer with the legend, “I Want You.” Starting Dec. 16, large posters for street display and cardboard signs for window display will be distributed throughout the U.S. in a new recruiting campaign. The poster was drawn by James Montgomery Flagg, who died in 1960. The original is in the Smithsonian Institution. This will not be the first time the poster has been revived. The Government ordered 1,350,000 from the original design for a recruiting drive in World War II. In World War I, 4 million were printed.
