Nov. 4, 1964 - Two television networks have scheduled special hour-long shows starring the Beatles, the British pop singers and instrumentalists.
“The Beatles in America,” a filmed report on their visit to the U.S. last winter, will be presented by CBS on Friday, Nov. 13, at 8:30 p.m. “Around the Beatles,” a show taped in London, will be televised two days later at 7:30 p.m. by ABC.
The CBS show, described as a candid portrait of the foursome, was produced by David and Albert Maysles, who made a 70-minute film with theatrical distribution in mind.
“But we couldn’t arrange a theatrical release, so our agent threw out feelers to television,” David Maysles said today. “The film shows the Beatles in the Plaza Hotel in New York, on a train ride to Washington and during a concert there, and during their stay in Miami Beach.”
On CBS, the Beatles will be in the time period usually filled by “The Entertainers.” The network said the special show “would be presented as a feature of ‘The Entertainers.’”
On ABC, the Beatles will pre-empt “Wagon Train.” Aside from their songs, the network said, the Beatles will present a costumed parody of a scene from Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”
