Two Beatles Return to London

May 26, 1964 - There was a shocking scene today at London Airport as two of Britain’s Beatles — John Lennon and George Harrison, along with John’s wife Cynthia and George’s girlfriend, Pattie Boyd, 20 — arrived from Tahiti: no screams, no squeals, no mobbing. It was an unprecedented quiet Beatle welcome.

Lennon and Harrison and the girls looked bronzed and fit after their Pacific holiday. But why the quiet arrival?

Derek Taylor, assistant to Beatle manager Brian Epstein, said: “We didn’t even know they were coming back until a few hours ago — hence no fans. It’s not because of any drop in popularity.”

Harrison explained it later: “We decided to come back at short notice partly because John and Cynthia wanted to see little John, their baby.”

Paul McCartney, with actress Jane Asher, 18; and Ringo Starr, with hairdresser Maureen Cox, 18, are due back from their holiday in the Virgin Islands tomorrow.
