Mar. 4, 1965 - NBC announced plans today for turning “Dr. Kildare” into a new type of serialized evening drama beginning next fall. Under the plan, some stories would require six hours to tell.
For four years, “Dr. Kildare” has been an hour-long weekly show, with most episodes presenting a complete story. Next season, the show will be televised from 8:30 to 9 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays, and the stories will be told in installments.
Mort Werner, vice president of programs, said some stories might be presented in two episodes, but others could run as long as six weeks. In the latter case, the script would be divided into 12 parts or a total of six hours of air time, with time out for commercials.
Richard Chamberlain will continue in the role of Dr. Kildare, and Raymond Massey will be back next season as Dr. Gillespie. The series is produced by MGM Television.
