TV: Art Carney To Appear on “Du Pont Show of the Week”

May 1, 1963 - Art Carney (pictured in 1959) will star in “The Last Comedian,” an original teleplay to be staged by “Du Pont Show of the Week” on Sunday, June 2, from 10 to 11 p.m. on NBC. Lewis Freedman, producer, said the script had been submitted by Ernestine Barton, a 27-year-old native of San Diego, who had not previously written for television. “Art Carney will portray a comedian in a future period when comedy has been banned,” said Mr. Freedman. “It is against the law to make people laugh. This last comedian is a fugitive going from town to town giving black-market performances.” Another principal role will be filled by John Megna, the child actor who plays Dill Harris in the current motion picture, “To Kill a Mockingbird.”
