Toys: “Show ’N Tell Phono-Viewer” from General Electric

“Oct. 14, 1964 - In our affluent society, something new is constantly being devised for the nursery. This week it is General Electric that gets the lollipop for its “Show ’N Tell Phono-Viewer.” That unit combines a transistorized, four-speed phonograph and a slide-film viewer with an 11-inch screen.

For use with the unit, there are 35 programs in which the record tells the story in sound and music as the changing filmstrip slowly illustrates it. Programs are grouped in seven basic libraries: fairy tales and cartoon; children’s favorite classics I; children’s favorite classics II; history; science and space; the world we live in; and steps to knowledge.

The device can also be used as a conventional phonograph. It weighs 8½ pounds and measures 13 by 12 by 10½ inches. It will be available after Oct. 23 in Bloomingdale’s sixth-floor record department at $27 for the unit. The picture-sound programs are $5 for a set of five.
