Mar. 27, 1965 - Hitting No. 1 today on the Billboard Hot 100 was “Stop! In the Name of Love,” a single by the Supremes.
The song was written by Eddie Holland, Lamont Dozier, and Brian Holland Dozier got the idea after he had been cheated on by his girlfriend. In the heat of the argument, he said, “Baby, please stop, in the name of love — before you break my heart.” Those words open the song and are repeated throughout.
The Supremes recorded “Stop! In the Name of Love” in January and released it as a single on February 8.
The Supremes are the musical guests on tonight’s edition of “The Hollywood Palace,” hosted by Tony Randall. 9:30 p.m. on ABC.
