May 1, 1965 - Hitting No. 1 today on the Billboard Hot 100 was “Mrs. Brown, You’ve Got a Lovely Daughter,” a song written by Trevor Peacock and recorded by Herman’s Hermits. “Mrs. Brown” was originally sung by actor Tom Courtenay in “The Lads,” an ITV Television Playhouse play of 1963.
“Mrs. Brown, You’ve Got a Lovely Daughter” was recorded by Herman’s Hermits on Dec. 1 of last year as an afterthought in two takes. The recording features unique muted lead and rhythm guitar by Derek Leckenby and Keith Hopwood and heavily accented lead vocals by Peter Noone, with backing vocals from Karl Green and Keith Hopwood.
