Top of the Charts: “I Get Around” by the Beach Boys

July 4, 1964 - Taking the top spot today on the Billboard Hit 100 is “I Get Around” by the Beach Boys. Released on May 11, the song will be the opening track on the Beach Boys’ forthcoming album, “All Summer Long,” scheduled for release on July 13.

Written by Beach Boys Brian Wilson and Mike Love, the autobiographical lyrics of “I Get Around” describe the group’s reaction to their newfound fame and success as well as their restlessness concerning the status quo and their desire to find new places “where the kids are hip.”

Wilson produced the backing track with his bandmates and a selection of session musicians on April 2 at Western Studios in Hollywood. This date, which coincided with the tracking for “Little Honda,” marked the beginning of the “All Summer Long” sessions. The group overdubbed their vocals on “I Get Around” eight days later.
