Top of the Charts: “Game of Love” by Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders

Apr. 24, 1965 - Hitting No. 1 today on the Billboard Hot 100 was “Game of Love,” a single by Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders.

The song was first released as a single from the band’s self-titled album in January 1965 in the U.K. and in the U.S. one month later as “Game of Love.”

Wayne Fontana founded the band in June 1963 with Bob Lang, Ric Rothwell, and Eric Stewart. The name of the group was inspired by the title of a 1963 U.K. feature film starring Dirk Bogarde called “The Mind Benders.”

Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders released a number of singles before recording “Um, Um, Um, Um, Um, Um” last year, which was their first major hit in Britain and led to a tour with Brenda Lee.
