Top of the Charts: “A Hard Day’s Night” by the Beatles

Aug. 3, 1964 - Hitting No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 today is “A Hard Day’s Night” by the Beatles.

Credited to Lennon-McCartney, the song was primarily written by John Lennon with some minor collaboration from Paul McCartney. It was released on the film soundtrack of the same name in this country on June 26 and as a single on July 13. The B-side is “I Should Have Known Better.”

On April 16th, the Beatles gathered at EMI Studios in London and recorded “A Hard Day’s Night.” It took them less than three hours to polish the song for its final release, eventually selecting the ninth take as the one to be released. George Harrison plays a Rickenbacker 12-string guitar on the recording which gives it a distinctive sound, especially on the opening chord.
