Top of the Albums Chart: “Beach Boys Concert”

Dec. 5, 1964 - Taking the top spot on Billboard’s Top 200 Albums chart today was “Beach Boys Concert,” the first live album by the California rock band the Beach Boys. The album, their seventh in all and their third of 1964, was released on Oct. 19. It is the first live album to top pop music record charts in this country.

The album was recorded live Dec. 21 of last year at the Sacramento Memorial Auditorium, though it received heavy post-production treatment. It includes several songs the Beach Boys regularly perform live but have not previously included on an album, such as “The Little Old Lady from Pasadena,” “Long Tall Texan,” “Monster Mash,” “Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow,” “The Wanderer,” and “Johnny B. Goode.” Alongside these is a sampling of their hits, such as “Hawaii,” “Fun, Fun, Fun,” and “I Get Around.”

The Beach Boys are comprised of Mike Love, Al Jardine, Brian Wilson, Carl Wilson, and Dennis Wilson.
