🚨Thirty-Three Soviet Tanks Move into East Berlin in Show of Force

Oct. 26, 1961 - Thirty-three Soviet medium tanks, manned by Soviet troops, moved into the center of East Berlin today. It was a show of military power clearly calculated to counter the force displayed by the U.S. to assert the right of free entry into the Communist sector of the city. The tanks were manned by black-uniformed Soviet troops believed to be from the 20th Guards Division stationed near Berlin. The tanks were tentatively identified as T-54’s, the latest-model Soviet medium tank, which mounts a long-barreled 100-millimeter gun. The tanks were accompanied by jeeps and personnel carriers with troops. Russian-manned tanks have not been seen in East Berlin for several years. They put down the East German uprising of June, 1953.
