July 5, 1965 - The Secret Service quietly noted its 100th birthday today.
The agency was established in July 1865 to stop the counterfeiting of paper money, Government checks, and bonds. (Pictured below, Secret Service agents flank President Theodore Roosevelt’s carriage at his 1905 inaugural.)
After the assassination of three Presidents — Lincoln, Garfield, and McKinley — in 37 years, it was given the added responsibility of protecting the life of the President and his family.
