Dec. 2, 1964 - There is no longer such a baseball team as the Houston Colt .45s. Now they are the Houston Astros.
Club president Roy Hofheinz announced the name change last night.
“We think it is in keeping with the situation in which we are the space capital of the world,” Hofheinz said. “The name was taken from the stars and indicates that we are on the ascendancy.”
The nation’s manned spacecraft center, a training facility for astronauts, is 25 miles east of the city.
The Colt Firearms Company had questioned the National League club’s use of the name Colt .45s on souvenirs sold at Colt Stadium. The team will move to the Harris County Domed Stadium for the 1965 season.
