Feb. 19, 1964 - A television comedy series in which actors will portray characters in Charles Addams’s macabre cartoons will make its debut next season on ABC. The producer of the half-hour series will be David Levy, former vice president of programs for NBC-TV. Tentatively titled “The Addams Family,” the series will be produced in consultation with the cartoonist.
Edgar Scherick, vice president of programs for ABC, announced plans for “The Addams Family” only a few days after CBS had announced it would do a similar type of comedy show called “The Munsters.” “The Munsters” is about a family whose members look like monsters but are unaware of it. The seven principal characters in “The Addams Family” are Morticia, the wife; Gomez, the husband; Granny; Uncle Fester; Lurch, the servant; Puggsley, the boy; and Wednesday, the girl.
