Teenager Killers Sentenced to Hang

Nov. 7, 1961 - Two teenage soldiers accused of having killed seven persons were convicted today and sentenced to hang. James D. Latham (left), 19, of Mauriceville, Tex., and George R. York (right), 18, of Jacksonville, Fla., were convicted of the murder of Otto Ziegler, 62, in June. The jury deliberated nearly seven hours. It rejected a plea that the pair were insane. The youths were accused of having committed murders in Florida, Tennessee, Illinois, and Colorado. Their spree started May 24 with their escape from a stockade at Fort Hood, Tex., and ended with their capture near Salt Lake City June 10. The two sat quietly as the verdict was read. Neither showed emotion.
